“It’s all the more controversial because airlines in Europe, Asia and the Middle East allow calls and have even taken it a step further by introducing pay-by-minute cellphone service using satellites.

Americans are split about in-flight mobile phones, a survey by the Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics found. About 45% said cellphones should be banned on aircraft. About 40% said they should definitely or probably be allowed if they don’t pose a safety threat, according to the survey, which queried about 1,000 households.”

You can read more on USA Today

June 2009 looks set to be the most expensive month in the aviation insurance market since September 2001, a report by Aon has revealed.

With just over half of 2009 gone, claims including an estimate for minor losses are already around 11% higher than the average for a full year. This means that total claims are likely to be significantly higher than the average by the end of the year, even if there are no further major incidents.

“With losses so far this year already above the full year average, the industry is likely to see insurance premiums rise significantly,” Aon said in the report. “This will be a bitter pill to swallow for an industry that is already seeing passenger numbers fall as a result of the global economic downturn as well as fuel prices that are climbing once again.”

What’s your guess, will commercial aviation industry increase their price or multiply special offers to encourage us to take the plane more often?

Good news, according to the annual National Airline Quality Rating (AQR) report released today, fewer planes were late, fewer bags were lost, and fewer people got bumped from their flights in 2008.

Bad news, it’s in large part because fewer people were flying due to the recession.

The number of people that take to the skies is expected to drop another 8 or 9 percent this year, according to recent FAA projections, creating even less congestion. If that happens, and the airlines continue with their improved practices and behaviors, Professor Headley says, “I would have to think 2009 would be a good time to fly, although it may cost a bit more.”

The challenge of current world economic conditions is set to drive uptake of video telepresence in the next three years, with the travel industry losing out, according to Gartner Inc.

Gartner analysts predict that high-definition based video meeting solutions will replace 2.1 million airline seats annually, costing the travel and hospitality industry US$3.5 billion per year.

In the meantime, Second Life should not have any impact on travel industry. Amazing, huh?
