Soon airline fees will cost more than airfare!

Reading Marc Friedman on Examiner, I notice how right he is.

“In the past week Delta, Continental, United and US Airways all raised their fees for checking your bags with them.” For example, American Airlines, looking to goose revenue in a recessionary environment, plans to raise checked-bag fees on U.S. domestic itineraries by $5.

“To add insult to injury, airlines around the globe are implementing all kinds of cuckoo fees in lieu of raising fares, and some of these fees are bound to find their way to our shores. [...] There are also fees for choosing in advance where you’d like to sit. Other new frequent flier fees are becoming more the norm, where redemption of frequent flyer miles on shorter notice than say, 14 days before departure costs more than if you make your plans a month out.Does this one make any sense to anyone out there?”

OK, the recession, the swine flu scare and rising fuel prices have hammered the airlines results.
My guess is none of these fees will solve the airlines’ problems.

Movie lovers, find your inner Ebert! With the click of a mouse, Delta and the Tribeca Film Festival are giving people inside access to Delta’s 3rd Annual Fly-In Movies Competition.

From now until April 12, you will be able to watch the films onboard selected Delta flights, or on the Delta website. After you screen each movie, channel your inner movie critic. Considering their originality, creativity and technical merit, rate each film from 1 to 5 stars (5 being the best). Your ratings will determine the winner, which will be screened at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival.

Delta offers Wi-Fi on 20 of its aircraft

Wireless Internet service is starting to spread among airlines in the United States. The companie Delta has installed it on 20 planes (17 MD88 and 3 Boeing 757), and several other airline companies are considering it as well.

The cost is about $10 for three hours and more for longer flights.

Do you welcome the development to help end Web withdrawals while being in flight?

Delta has already had Boeing 747

Delta has communicated a lot on the arrival of its first Boeing 747-400 (with some A330 too, all related to acquisition of Northwest), in particular with this movie that has been seen a lot and where we could see how the plane was painted:

But in fact, this is not the first Boeing 747 for Delta. Indeed, the super-jumbo has joined the fleet of the company on October 2 1970, soon joined by 7 other planes. Very quickly abandoned, because the 747-100 was not adapted to the the Delta traffic at this time (Caribbean and Canada).

For the anecdote, the upper deck was actually a suite. It was enough to take 7 first class tickets to afford the luxury of this space.
